SLB Turkey Sunday

November 20, 2022

SLB Turkey Sunday efforts begin next weekend

The second annual SLB Turkey Sunday collection and its efforts begin next weekend, November 5-6. This special collection will be used toward purchasing frozen turkeys for those in need during the holiday. Envelopes will be available at both churches starting next weekend if you would like to donate.

On Saturday, November 19, the pre-ordered turkeys will be picked up and delivered to the parish food pantry and the St. Vincent de Paul Society for distribution to local families in need and shut ins. Furthermore, volunteers will be bagging food at the River Forest Community Center on Saturday, November 19. Sandwiches will be provided to those volunteers, however, they are asked to bring their own water bottles. The packaged food will be ordered in advance and in bulk and includes russet and sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, canned corn, canned green beans, canned cranberries, Jiffy corn bread mix, bags of stuffing and rice.

On Sunday, November 20, volunteers will be collecting frozen turkeys weighing more than 20 pounds at all the Masses for the larger families on our list. The hope is to collect 60 frozen turkeys to serve all of the larger families. Unfortunately, no fresh turkeys can be accepted. Any non-perishable food donated on Sunday, November 20, will go to the parish food pantry.

Following Masses on Sunday, November 20, volunteers will load the bags of food into vehicles at the River Forest Community Center for delivery to the distribution sites: St. Agatha Church, The Learning Center/House of Connections and The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Youth Center. The Thanksgiving dinners will be delivered to 250 families in the North Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods.

You can contribute to SLB Turkey Sunday in five ways:

  1. Put a Turkey Sunday envelope with a donation in any weekend collection- starting next weekend with the Turkey Sunday special collection.
  2. Donate online through this link, https://pushpay.com/g/stlstbparish?fnd=RJ8WeQ36qSGuk0y42hp4-g&fndv=Lock&lang=en&src=pcgl
  3. Give your donation to volunteers before or after any Mass during November 19-20.
  4. Donate a large frozen turkey on SLB Turkey Sunday morning (November 20) at any Mass.
  5. Volunteer! See more information below.

Note: if you are writing a check, write it out to St. Luke and St. Bernardine Parish and write “SLB Turkey Sunday” on the memo line.

We will need many volunteers, including people with SUVs and trucks to transport the frozen turkeys and bags of food. It is quite the feat to provide Thanksgiving dinner to 250 families! To volunteer on Saturday, November 19, or Sunday, November 20, visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4dafa82da3fa7-turkey. Contact Tony Graefe at 708-334-1304 with any questions.

Thank you in advance for contributing to SLB Turkey Sunday Weekend!
